Chapter thirteen

Lucy

I had rehearsed this moment all weekend. I didn't want to call or text because this really seemed like an issue that needed to be dealt with face to face. I had assured myself over and over again that I would have a better sense of what to do once I saw Sam in person again, but standing there in front of him, I was terrified. Still, I forged ahead, forcing myself to say the words, "I think we need to talk about the other nights…"

He looked at me with an evident alarm and ripped his eyes away. He ran a quick, fidgeting hand through his hair, then said, "That's really not necessary, Lucy."

"I think it is," I insisted, sticking to my guns.

He waved a dismissive hand. "What is there to discuss? We had our fun, you went on your way…it's nothing that two adults don't do all the time. If you're worried about it being awkward at work, don't be. You and I are two mature adults, but we both have jobs to do, so I think we're both capable of behaving as if nothing ever happened," he said with a crisp voice.

Every word that came out of his mouth felt like a rock being chucked at me. I didn't know what I had been expecting, but I had the sudden urge to crawl up into a ball and hide somewhere. The memory of Reagan's promise to procure a melon baller to use creatively popped into my head, and I remembered that I was a strong, capable woman. I would not be felled by this man of power because he obviously didn't have the same feelings over our time together as I did.

"Of course, sir. I just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any discomfort," I said in a placid tone.

He plastered a smile across his face. "I'm comfortable, aren't you comfortable?" he asked quickly.

I gave him an equally fake smile. "Sure," I said, not knowing what else to say. "I am going to start that proposal now, and I'll have it in your inbox by this afternoon," I told him.

He nodded enthusiastically, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Great, great, I will be looking out for that," he said, looking everywhere but at me.

I left his office feeling discouraged. "Not awkward at all," I muttered to myself. I waved to Seth on my way out and then holed up in my office, spending the next few hours working on the proposal for the retreat.

I had just finished it up and sent it to Sam when I decided to take a restroom break. No sooner had I left my office than I ran almost smack into Elliott, of all people. "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. I didn't expect to see you there," I told him.

He leered down at me. "Oh, yes, it is the illustrious Ms. Kane. What are you getting into at the moment?"

I supposed to any passersby, those questions would seem innocuous enough, but there was a hint of hostility in his tone that set me on edge.
